Chattanooga Police respond to shooting on N Holtzclaw and E 3rd St.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Police have responded to a shooting on North Holtzclaw at East 3rd Street.

UPDATE:

Officers were on the scene for a street-crime related detail. They encountered a suspect on N. Holtzclaw Ave. and E 3rd St. around 9:42 p.m.

“This person was the object of this detail. It was not a random traffic stop at all. So the suspect was known and that’s who the focus was on. We protect this city 24/7 and just wanted to let you know that Chattanooga Police Department is on the job any day or night,” Chief Celeste Murphy said.

The suspect was 34-year-old Roger Heard, Jr. from Chattanooga.

Authorities attempted to arrest Heard on outstanding warrants, at a business at 1330 E 3rd Street in Chattanooga.

Reports from the scene indicate that during the encounter, Heard exited a vehicle and produced a pistol.

“At some point, at the stop, gunfire was exchanged. The officer and the suspect were both shot. The officer sustained injuries and has since been released. He’s stable. The suspect has since been expired and deceased,” Murphy said.

At that time, multiple officers discharged their service weapons, striking Heard.

He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

During the use of force incident, one officer sustained gunshot wounds and was also taken to an area hospital, where he was treated and has since been released.

TBI agents continue to work to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

As the TBI follows through with their investigation, and further details are provided, the department will update the public.

“Our officers are out there protecting and serving regardless of the dangers. But bear in mind that we understand there is a family that is suffering a loss right now. But I am indeed satisfied that our officers are safe and the officer who got injured last night made it through, and he’s stable,” Murphy said.
