Chattanooga Public Library kicks off Start Smart Initiative
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Chattanooga Public Library is launching a new program that will get rid of fines for the youths overdue books.
The Start Smart Initiative is a two-fold plan to help increase the library accessibility for students ages 17 and younger.
Starting January 13, 2025, until the end of February, all materials will be fine-free.
No matter how long the materials have been checked out, they’re still eligible for forgiveness.
The only stipulation is that the materials are returned undamaged.
“We know that literacy and learning take root long before children step into a classroom. Start Smart reflects our commitment to planting the seeds of early childhood development and nurturing successful K-12 education across our region. By going ‘no fines for growing minds,’ we’re not just eliminating late fees — we’re eliminating barriers to opportunity and easing financial stress for families.”
–Will O’Hearn, Executive Director at the Library
Library cards for kids five and under are also now available at no cost.
