Chattanooga remembers Councilman Moses Freeman Jr.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Chattanooga remembers the life of former City Councilman Moses Freeman Junior.
“He was he was a special person, you know, he was always interested in moving forward education and everything in a black community that was positive,” said John Edwards, writer with the Chattanooga News Chronicle.
In 1956, Moses Freeman Jr graduated from the Howard School. Then went on to study history at UTC and teaching at Tennessee State University.
Later in life Freeman ran for Chattanooga city council and won District 8.
Edwards considers Moses Freeman as a leader in the community.
“He is an example of what you should be and what you can be giving service to the community,” said Edwards. “Just a great example of that, offering his advice and his wisdom, and people just kind of loved him, young and old.”
Freeman served in various organizations across Chattanooga including being a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Representative Yusuf Hakeem says Freeman was full of life.
“I found him to be a person that you can count on,” said Representative Hakeem. “He loved people, he loved serving the people. So he was an individual who sort of paved the way for people like myself.”
And Representative Hakeem hopes Freeman’s legacy lives on in Chattanooga.
“He was inclusive. He dealt with people on a one on one bases, and I think a lot of us progress because of the relationship we had with him,” Representative Hakeem concluded.
