Chattanooga Residents Respond to US Bank Hacking

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Emily Wagner, a UTC student, says, "Oh, my gosh, that’s terrifying."

That’s how Wagner feels about the recent headlines saying Russian internet hackers hit JP Morgan Chase and at least four other banks, possibly getting away with customer checking and savings account information.

Wagner adds, "Personally, I don’t feel very safe and I do it the old fashioned way. I prefer to just write out my checks and just send it in the mail."

But others consistently use the internet to bank and pay for other purchases, like Derek Anderson.

Anderson adds, "I think the main thing is not to focus on whether or not we need to back away from online banking because it’s sort of impossible at this point."

Anderson says he’s not that scared of hackers because he takes precautions.

According to Anderson, "If you’re willing to take extra steps, like you know, instead of just using your credit card when you buy something online. That is tied to your bank account. You can use something like Pay Pal."

This latest internet hack may be in retaliation for US financial sanctions against Russia.

And just a few weeks ago Russians are thought to have stolen more than a billion usernames and password combinations, along with hundreds of email addresses.

Anderson adds, "We’re so globalized in the internet and everything that the best solution practically speaking would be to try and focus more resources specifically on figuring out how to defend against hackers."

But that may be harder than you think.

According to CBS News, 80 percent of executives surveyed said their organizations can’t keep up with today’s hackers.

JP Morgan Chase released a statement to CBS News.

It reads in part, "We have multiple layers of defense to counteract any threats and constantly monitor fraud levels."

So far, JP Morgan Chase says they have not noticed any suspicious activity.
