Chattanooga secures funding for transit development
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded $630,000 to the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA).
This funding will support a transit-oriented development (TOD) planning project along the Brainerd Road/Lee Highway corridor.
With an additional $157,500 in funding from the City of Chattanooga, this $787,500 initiative aims to enhance transit access, promote affordable housing, and support sustainable development.
The project aligns with Chattanooga’s “Plan Chattanooga” vision, focusing on equitable and accessible transit solutions.
“This grant represents a major milestone for CARTA and the City,” said CARTA CEO Charles D. Frazier.
The TOD planning will evaluate opportunities for a proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line that would better connect communities while advancing diverse, mixed-income housing.
Mayor Tim Kelly also celebrated the grant as a key component in Chattanooga’s “One Chattanooga” goals, emphasizing its role in fostering economic growth, job access, and an improved quality of life for residents.
The study will begin in early 2025, with CARTA and the Regional Planning Agency working together to engage the community actively.
