Chattanooga State names engineering building after former Tennessee lawmaker, Gerald McCormick
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The once known “CETAS” engineering building at Chattanooga State Community College was renamed in honor of former Tennessee Lawmaker, Gerald McCormick.
McCormick was chosen to receive this honor for many reasons, but one being that he fought to raise the original budget for the building itself.
“Four-year colleges and universities are important, but so are the two years and the certificate programs and that’s what they do here,” said former Tennessee lawmaker, Gerald McCormick.
Today, right in front of the building, members of the community and some of McCormick’s fellow Tennessee lawmakers gathered to acknowledge this honor.
CETAS houses many programs within the realm of engineering including ones like courses on nuclear power, cyber security, chemical operations, robotics, welding and many more.
“I just hope a lot of people come through here and get trained for jobs that change their lives and their family’s lives and that’s the kind of jobs they train for here. Whether it’s for Volkswagen or whoever it is, they are people who probably wouldn’t otherwise have as good of a job after they come through the training here,” said McCormick.
Many of the speakers, and even McCormick himself, choked up during the ceremony today.
“Gerald is such a blessing to all of us. Yes, you are a great majority leader. Yes, you are one of the good guys,” said former Chattanooga Mayor and U.S. Senator, Bob Corker.
The building will now officially be known as the Gerald McCormick Center for Engineering, Technology Arts and Sciences.
“I was speechless, which is unusual for a politician,” said McCormick with gratitude.
