Chattanooga’s 29th homicide of the year happens on Thanksgiving afternoon

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – 43-year-old Darrel Jones was found dead on East 37th Street at Central avenue about mid-afternoon Thursday.
Deputy Chief David Roddy with the Chattanooga Police Department said, "A family member actually found the victim lying facedown on the side of the street and he’d been shot more than once..is what I have at this time."
Jones was well known in the Alton Park area. Deputy Chief Roddy added, "Obviously because of the holidays the family are spread out so I know that some of the families are responding in at this time..and they’re trying to make as many notifications quickly as they can."
It marks the 29th homicide of the year…and the second in that general area this week. A mother of three was killed in a drive-by on Highland Avenue Tuesday.  But Deputy Chief Roddy said, "These do not appear connected in any way".
The latest tragedy..the 125th shooting of the year in Chattanooga takes a toll on victims and police alike.
Deputy Chief David Roddy said, "Its the frustration all of us felt the other night ..this is the time when families are supposed to come together to enjoy one another’s company ..to enjoy a peaceful few hours …a few minutes, a few days. And unfortunately we have an entire family down here that’s not going to get to experience that because of ruthlessness of one of the members of our community who committed this crime."
