Chattanooga’s Avious Griffin Enjoying Second Chance at Boxing Career

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Chattanooga Native professional boxer Avious Griffin is 13-0 with 12 knockouts and will be fighting again Saturday night.

News 12’s Brian Armstrong shows how Griffin went from sitting in a jail cell wrongfully convicted of a murder to being a top 10 boxer in the world.

Just two years after starting his boxing career on May 20th, 2018, Avious Griffin was accused of murder and locked away in a jail cell.

Said Griffin:”It was most definitely a big bombshell. You know, I always had my determination that I was gonna be able to get back out. I always knew that I was an innocent man. I didn’t understand the situation. I was even incarcerated. None of it made sense to me. As I was incarcerated, it was up and down. You know, it was some days I feel good. I’m coming home. I’m gonna be back. And then someday I feel like, I don’t know, you know, I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I don’t know. Just letting the people in there get to me.”

Griffin says he never lost his faith in God and what kept him sane was knowing he was innocent.

Said Griffin:”I stayed working out the whole time. Push up, pull up, shadow boxing. Like, I always knew, like, when I get out of here, I’m gonna beat this and I’m gonna prevail. ”

After another person admitted to the murder, Griffin was released from jail and he had to start his boxing career all over despite his 4 0 record.

Said Griffin:”And I don’t have no promoter no more. I don’t have no sponsors no more. You know, I didn’t have no, the team I had before I was incarcerated. So we had to just grind and get it out the mud and we get the show back on the road.”

He viewed being released from jail as a second chance at life and he wasn’t going to let it slip away.

Said Griffin:”I always told myself, this time, it’s time to go to Vegas and see, can I really hang? Can I really hang with the big dogs? Because Vegas is the capital of boxing.”

After all he had been through, he was finally able to fight again and it filled that rush he had been missing.

Said Griffin:”

Man, it was just, it was, it was so emotional because I had to overcame everything and to like, to be actually lacing up the gloves again, to actually be stepping out in the ring again, you know, doing what, what God blessed me to do again. It was just like, it was a big emotional moment, man. I might’ve shed some tears back.”
