A local company is applauding new tariffs put on Chinese imports of anode active materials.

NOVONIX in Chattanooga produces battery materials.

The Department of Commerce has put a 160-percent tariff on Chinese Graphite used in batteries.

Officials with the Chattanooga company says that the Chinese dumping of battery graphite is a major competitor for them.

They say boosting the tariff is a meaningful step toward restoring fair competition in the U.S. market.

The U.S. International Trade Commission must approve the tariff boost in March.
