Choo Choo Garden Gets Makeover

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The iconic Chattanooga Choo Choo is getting a much-needed facelift.

Don Boutz, a longtime business owner, has operated Sweetly Southern with his wife inside the historic Choo Choo Garden for 53 years.

From blooming rose gardens to the relocation of the model train exhibit to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, he’s seen all the changes.

He told News 12 he believes the current makeover is necessary to preserve the space, especially as parts of it fall into disrepair.

As travel costs continue to rise, Boutz shared his hope that the cleared space will be turned into something family-friendly, like a playground, offering free entertainment in an area popular with young tourists.

Approximately five sections of canopies on each side of the central garden rows, starting near the pond, are being carefully removed.

Management says the work is part of a broader effort to enhance the space while preserving its historic charm.

The project is expected to wrap up by July 12th, just in time for the Choo Choo’s highly anticipated Firefly Twilight Market.
