Church Isn’t As Bad Off as Scammers Would Have You Believe

Cleveland, TN (WDEF) – The Bradley County Sheriff is warning people about a church solicitation scam going around.

The Phillippi Baptist Church is real.

But their financial crisis isn’t.

Sheriff Watson says the pitch is that the church needs money immediately to stay open.

But pastor Samuel Hooker says that’s not true.

And the church doesn’t know anything about the solicitations.

Sheriff Watson says if you are asked to donate money to a church or other organization, contact them first to make sure the pitch is legit.

“Giving to your church or a legitimate group that helps others is a Godly-thing to do,” the Sheriff said, “People who steal in the name of the Lord are about as low as you can go…and they need to be in jail.”
