City of Dalton implementing 30-day burn ban
DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) — The City of Dalton is going under a burn ban, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 13.
The ban prohibits all outdoor burning.
Those who violate the burn ban may receive a $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail. They will also be held responsible for any damages that the fire causes.
The following burning is currently banned in Dalton:
- Brush fires
- Agricultural burning
- Burning trees
- Burning debris
- Campfires
- Open cooking fires
- Warming fires
- Bonfires
- All use of fireworks
Dalton’s fire department plans to extinguish all fires they encounter.
The burn ban will last at least 30 days, and it was implemented by the Dalton Fire Department.
A burn ban is also in effect for all of Whitfield County as well. This includes the unincorporated areas, too.
Fire departments implemented these bans due to the recent drought and dry conditions.
The city says the rain they received over the weekend did not make much of an impact on the fire risk.
Currently, 49% of Whitfield County is in an “extreme drought,” and the other 51% are in an “exceptional drought,” according to city officials.
“According to state records, October was the 8th driest month in the last 129 years,” the city added. They say the current drought conditions are similar to those from 2016.
