City Reveals Water Quality Improvement Plan At Local Park

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Community members learned more about phase one of the project, which includes the installation of an outdoor classroom.

During the planning phase, students had the opportunity to give their input on the project.

“Over the last year and a half the community in partnership with the city, local non-profits and the schools have been working to come up with a concept for improvements for both the lake and surrounding the lake,” said Jennifer Norton who is a water Quality Specialist.

The trees surrounding the lake help with water quality.

“Trees and other vegetation do a great job to clean that water, get it into the soil where it can be filtered, get down into the water table and then get into a creek stream when it is clean,” said Lynn Rutherford who is a landscape inspector.

Students were able to give their input on what they would like to see happen.

“It is so important for kids to get involved in projects like this, because this is their community and this is where they are going to learn and this is where they learn,” said Norton.

Students had different reasons for participating.

Araceli Ramirez Francisco stated,”I would like to see the park become a better place for everyone and we made different designs in the park so everyone can come and enjoy the park.”

One suggestion they had was to add a walkway, where people can experience nature up close.

“I really liked doing the project because it gave us a lot of ideas for engineering concepts and what people have to go through to build new things,” said Bryan Rocha.

A project that gets kids out of the classroom and into the outdoors.

Money for the project comes from the Lyndhurst foundation and partial funding will come from the city as well.
