“Clerk’s Property Office” scam going around Hamilton County

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) —  Hamilton County residents need to be on the lookout for a potential scam.

Hamilton County Register of Deeds Marc Gravitt issued a warning to county residents about deceptive letters sent by an organization calling itself the “Clerk’s Property Office.”

These letters, which appear to be from an official government agency, are attempting to charge residents $89 for property information readily available at much lower or no cost.

The letters use an official-looking seal, property details, and county property ID numbers, making them seem legitimate at first glance.

They offer to provide a copy of the property deed, legal descriptions, and other information for a fee.

“I want Hamilton County citizens to know, this letter, while appearing to be official and contains correct information concerning their property, it did not come from my office, nor any other Hamilton County office. If you look closely, these statements have a return address in Nashville, and for you to send your check, money order or credit card information to a St. Petersburg, Florida address. Both of these addresses are post offices boxes”, said Gravitt.

He urged residents to disregard these letters and to contact the Register of Deeds office directly if they need property documents or information.
