Cleveland Police Department officer being praised for buying family’s groceries

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF)- A Cleveland Police officer being praised for buying family’s groceries.

The officer did not know the family, but they were familiar to him because he has served in this community for almost 18 years.

Officer Kelly says he did not expect the attention, but he was grateful for the opportunity to help this family.

Officer Kelly says, “God said stop, stop this is why you are here tonight and this is what I put you here for.”

Chief Mike Gibson says after getting a basic description of him, they used some “crafty investigative skills” and were able to figure out that it was Officer Mike Kelly.

It was this facebook post that alerted the Cleveland Police Department to the kind deed of Officer Kelly.

Officer Kelly says, “They went to get groceries and they always catch my eye because they always just get groceries. It also catches my eye that the kids are so well behaved. Most kids in Walmart are looking at the candy saying daddy can we get this daddy can we get that.”

Officer Kelly took the father aside and made sure it was ok… and he took care of their tab, also making sure the kids got a little candy as well.

Officer Kelly says he was worried that they were going to go home hungry, while he was “sitting up here working and extra job just to make a little extra money.”

Comments flooded in to the police department saying Officer Kelly’s kindness speaks volumes about his character.

Kelly had something to say to the police reaching out, but also, to anyone who might be facing a difficult time in their life.

“Hold on…God’s never let anybody down that I know of, and he won’t let you down.        I encourage a lot of people to keep their eyes open and look for opportunities to bless somebody that’s what we’re here for and that’s what I feel that we are put on this earth for to help each other out and We are the one’s that get the blessing when we help people.”
