Cleveland Recalls Monumental Victory Over Maryville
Cleveland, TN-(WDEF-TV) Cleveland shocked the state on Friday.
They defeated Maryville, handing the Knoxville power house program their first region loss in 22 years.
Cleveland head coach Marty Wheeler didn’t have a single player who was born the last time Maryville lost a region game.
Said Wheeler:”First thing that stands out to me is that’s unbelievable for any team that would go that long without losing a region game right?”
Yet there was Cleveland, taking a 21-14 lead into the fourth quarter, only to see the Rebels score the next ten points.
Said Wheeler:”I didn’t see any panic in anybody on the sidelines.”
No panic, All guts.
Said quarterback Drew Lambert:”I knew our offense could drive down the field with them. We had been doing it all game.”
Cleveland tied the game at 24 on a field goal, but Maryville was penalized for roughing the kicker. That’s when Marty Wheeler broke an old football adage.
Said Wheeler:”You’re not supposed to take points off the board. I just felt like at that point we had an opportunity to try to win the football game right there.”
Points down boys, we’re going for the win, and the Blue raiders got it on this TD pass from Drew Lambert to Lucas Szymborski. 28-24 Cleveland.
Said Lambert:”And I just for some reason I just keyed on him. Saw him open up. It worked out. It was awesome.”
Said Wheeler:”The effort Lucas made to get into the end zone to finish out the play. It was a total
team effort for us.”
Blue Raiders slayed Mighty Maryville.
Said Lambert:”We’ve worked so hard and for my senior year to get a win like that is awesome. It’s one I’ll never forget.”
Said Wheeler:”Somewhere around the first quarter when it was over with, and the game was tied. I think everybody felt like hey, we can play with these guys. To see your team believe in something that you want them to believe in is a pretty neat feeling man.”
