Cleveland’s Camden Sewell Embraces All Reliever Roles For the Vols
Knoxville, TN-(WDEF-TV) Tennessee has the most talked about team in college baseball. In the heart of that pitching staff is one Tennessee Valley native. News 12’s Angela Moryan went up to Rocky Top to catch up with the former Cleveland Blue Raider.
Tennessee’s home run hysteria has gripped headlines all season. Yes, the Vols offense has contributed significantly to that number one ranking. However, the pitching — particularly the bullpen’s depth — has been just as good. Cleveland alum Camden Sewell has been a main contributor to that success.
Said Sewell: “It’s kind of just surreal to think about.”
Former Cleveland Blue Raider Camden Sewell has gone from the number 4 overall Tennessee prospect …. to a regular Tennessee *Vol workhorse. But that wasn’t his original plan.
Said Sewell: “It’s kind of a crazy recruiting story, but I obviously grew up a Florida fan so that was always the place I wanted to go. Then I was just fortunate enough to visit here, and I actually committed the day after I left here. So I knew this place was home and this place is unbelievable. … At that time, this program wasn’t what it is now, so I’m blessed to be a part of what it is now.”
Sewell is a major part of what it is now… He’s struck out more than 120 batters since 2019 and is Coach Tony Vitello’s go-to righty reliever.
Said teammate Redmond Walsh: “You can get whatever you want. You can get one inning out of him. You can get six. So having somebody like that that can come in late in the game that can give you extra innings maybe, save the bullpen a little bit or help out a starter, I mean that’s unbelievable, and that’s what he does.”
Said Sewell: “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of different roles here, and every single role I tend to find, you find something unique about every single different role. Whatever role you’re in at that point, you kind of feed off of. It’s kind of fun to be able to be in a lot of different situations.”
Said Walsh: “He’s super talented and more than anything he’s kind of like in a way the glue that holds us together. His sense of humor and relaxed personality kind of keeps us how we are all year, kind of how we play. Keeps us level. Kind of keeps us never too high, too low.”
Keeps the Vols winning, as well.
Said Sewell: “Everybody on this team literally wants to win, and that’s all they care about is winning. It’s pretty special to have a bunch of dudes fighting for each other, and every game you believe you have a really good chance to win.”
Both Walsh and Sewell say this team is just so fun to be a part of every week. In Knoxville , I’m Angela Moryan.
