Cleveland’s Lauren Hurst a Dangerous Two Sport Athlete

Cleveland, TN-(WDEF-TV) Cleveland High School junior Lauren Hurst puts the dual, in dual-threat athlete. She’s the reigning Gatorade state player of the year in volleyball.

And she’s got D-one college basketball offers from schools such as Virginia Tech and Tennessee. News 12’s Brian Armstrong catches up with one of the top female athletes in the Tennessee Valley.

Said head volleyball coach Amy McGowan “I feel like I’ll bring a lot of energy and a lot of competitiveness and a lot of desire to win. But it’s her attitude off the court that really shines. She is just a wonderful human and I don’t, you know, a lot of times people don’t realize, you know, how these girls are off the court, but she, you know, she makes everybody laugh. She’s always hugging you and just, you know, I’ll be sitting on the bench and she’ll be sitting in my lap, you know, so that’s the stuff that makes Lauren awesome.”

Said Hurst “It’s definitely from the girls. It’s really easy to have a lot of energy and we’re all loving towards each other and I feel like nobody has our culture here like anywhere else.”

And that’s saying something as she’s a state champion volleyball player and last year’s Gatorade player of the year.

Said McGowan “Lauren is just, uh, I mean, an awesome athlete. And so, she just makes things happen. You know, she, when, when you need a point, she’s getting it. She says she gets her competitive drive and skill from her parents.

Said Hurst “Definitely my parents. They like to say that one or the other brings more, but definitely my parents and a lot of work put into that.”

She is also a standout on the basketball court as she has an offer to play for the Lady Vols as well as numerous other colleges. Which means she will likely have to pick one sport.

Said Hurst “It’s definitely the question of my life right now. So it’s, it’s a lot, but my parents help me out a lot.”

Whatever school and sport she picks when she leaves Cleveland, she will leave as one of the best Cleveland athletes of all time.

Said McGowan “Her sister, last year, uh, and I, you know, you can’t really, you know, they’re, they’re a little bit different, but I don’t know that, uh, you could put a best on either one of them, but I’m sure they’re in the top, both of them.”
