Commission to vote on Hamilton County Attorney restructuring

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Hamilton County Attorney’s Office is likely to have a new structure next month.

This is as incoming attorney Janie Parks Varnell is taking over for the longtime county attorney, Rheubin Taylor.

A resolution was put forward outlining formally what positions will be in the office.
Many of them had not been formally in writing up to this point.
Included in the clarifications are when outside counsel is to be used in county related disputes.
Commissioner Joe Graham said, “She needs the ability to bring in professionals like in situations such as Occupy Chattanooga, Occupy Hamilton County or whatever it was. Rheubin’s staff, they brought in outside counsel that was preferred for that issue. Several different issues that are out of the purview of the county attorney’s office and they have to bring in outside experts, no different than us using Baker Donaldson right now.”
The Commission will vote to formalize these rules next week as Varnell is set to become county attorney on July 1.
