Community walk shines light on Epilepsy Awareness Month

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Among the many things November is known for, this month also highlights Epilepsy Awareness.

Here in Chattanooga, dozens of people laced up their sneakers and came together for the annual Chattanooga Walk for Epilepsy at Tennessee Riverpark.

News 12 spoke with advocates and warriors who face the challenges of epilepsy every day.

Christy Howard, a guest speaker and epilepsy warrior, shared a message about the importance of vulnerability and support.

“We need somebody, and we need to be vulnerable. We need to let at least one person into our life to live alongside us.”

The event was hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Tennessee.

Executive Director Daniel Grzesik said the walk is about building community and strength.

“It’s a great way to rally support for those who live with epilepsy, who we call our epilepsy warriors. This really shows the network of support available, not only from the foundation, but from the people in our community.”

For Howard, the journey toward awareness began with a personal goal to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, a challenge she took on to spread hope and understanding.

“I wasn’t going to do it without a purpose,” Howard said. “So, I chose epilepsy awareness. I wanted people to understand not just the medical side, but the emotions that come with it, whether you have epilepsy yourself, or a family member or friend who does. It’s critical for all of us to work together.”

Also taking part was Leah Breeding, a young advocate who lives with epilepsy and hopes others will continue to learn and show compassion.

“It means a lot because you know you’re not alone,” Breeding said. “You have other people who understand what you’re going through, and you don’t feel different in a bad way.”

The Chattanooga Walk for Epilepsy serves as a reminder that awareness and understanding can change lives.

Each step taken at the event represents hope, resilience, and unity for those affected by epilepsy across the Tennessee Valley.
