CPD announces staffing changes to address gun violence
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – “With the increase of gun violence, not just in the city of Chattanooga but across the nation, I think this is the right move,” says Chattanooga City Councilman, Chip Henderson.
Starting July 2nd, Chattanooga Police will reallocate five existing, budgeted positions to enhance its response to gun violence.
And in light of recent targeted shootings such as the May 16th Coolidge Park incident, Councilman Henderson says it’s necessary.
“I don’t see that it will exacerbate, I think it would help us solve a lot of the crimes that we see that are happening. I believe it will help bring justice to some of the victims that are victims of these crimes,” says Henderson.
According to a press release, CPB will be reallocating five of those officers from their gang unit to their gun team, which was first formed in June of 2018.
“What we have to do is a better job of accounting for all of our kids that are graduating from high school. We need to have a robust workforce development in the city of Chattanooga.”
And when pressed for details, the Councilman said to stay tuned.
“We have to do a better job of making sure that all of our kids have a purpose going forward once they leave high school. And I think those are some of the things that you will be seeing from the city council and the new administration in the coming months.”
