JASPER, Tenn. (WDEF) — A widespread power outage in the Jasper area this morning was traced back to an unlikely culprit.

A small animal made its way into the Sequachee Valley Electric Cooperative substation located in Jasper.

Security footage captured the moment the critter triggered a fault inside the Jasper substation, causing significant damage and knocking out power to a large portion of the area.

Crews responded quickly, using the footage to pinpoint the issue and begin repairs.

Power is expected to be restored within the hour.

Meanwhile, a second outage is affecting the Van Buren area, including Fall Creek Falls and Mooneyham.

Crews are actively investigating and working to safely restore service.

Utility officials say animal-related outages are common, particularly in warmer months.

Despite protective equipment, curious wildlife occasionally find their way into sensitive areas.

Residents are thanked for their patience and reminded they can report outages by calling 888-421-7832 or using the SmartHub app.
