DA Wamp touts transfer of 14 teens tried as adults

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — District Attorney Coty Wamp said she helped transfer 14 teenagers to be tried as adults this year. Wamp says those juveniles were accused of dangerous crimes.

Those teens were transferred from the juvenile court to the criminal court in Hamilton County. The district attorney must consider the seriousness of the accused offense to request a transfer. Then, the juvenile court judge decides whether the defendant will be tried as an adult.

“Juveniles do not have an unlimited number of “second chances,” there will always come a time when my office says enough is enough,” Wamp said.

Of the defendants, there was one 14-year-old, two 15-year-olds, and the rest were between 16 and 18 when transferred.

One of the defendants is now deceased, according to Wamp’s release.

Juvenile Court Judge Rob Philyaw made the 14 transfers.
