Dalton Municipal Airport Completes Runway Resurfacing
Dalton Municipal Airport has wrapped up a major resurfacing project, giving its runway a much-needed makeover. After more than 30 years, the runway has finally been restored with new asphalt in a $5 million upgrade completed just yesterday.
“Last night, we actually reopened the runway at about 6:45 PM, so we are back open again. The runway had not been resurfaced since the 1980s, so it was well past due and in need of an upgrade,” said Andrew Wiersma, Manager of the City of Dalton.
Crews shaved off about two inches of the old asphalt surface and replaced it with five inches of fresh material, creating a smoother and more durable runway.
And basically, what they did was remove the top two inches of asphalt, then added five inches of new asphalt on top. The end result is about ten inches of asphalt in the center of the runway. This upgrade significantly increases the runway’s capacity, which will allow us to accommodate heavier aircraft and bring in larger equipment,” said Andrew.
Dalton Municipal Airport is now equipped with a runway built to last for years to come.
