Dalton Tight End Jeffson Locke Commits to Army

Dalton, GA-(WDEF-TV) Dalton high school’s Jeffson Locke made an impression on the military academies, and will be playing football at Army. Not only is this a way for him to prepare for the future, it also allows him to honor his uncle who died in battle. News 12’s Brian Armstrong has his story.

Jeffson Locke committed to Army to play football at the next level.

Said Locke: “We really wanted a place for me that would help set me up for life and build me in my character as a man on and off the field. And I really felt like West Point gave me the best opportunities for all of that.

The level of discipline required to be part of a military school also shows itself on the football field.

Said Dalton head coach Kit Carpenter: “If you’re disciplined on the field, you can’t just be disciplined in one area of your life and not discipline in others. It’s the same kind of character flaw that prevents you from doing that. And he certainly doesn’t have it, but he does a great job for us,”

Said Locke: “being a leader right, and helping my teammates and doing my part to help the teambe as best as the best that we can be.”

This is a bigger commitment in the game of life because when going to West Point you are required to serve in the army after graduating

Said Locke: .”It wasn’t really an idea before, but then I got the offers from the service academies and I really started paying attention to it more and more and I realized just how well I fit with it.”

Coach Carpenter says it’s a privilege to see his players go on to serve their country.

Carpenter: “Anytime that we have a kid that the former player that goes to a service academy, it’s really a special thing because of what it means not only to the school of the community, but to the nation”

This isn’t Locke’s first connection to the military. His uncle died in the line of duty during the Vietnam War.

Locke: “It means a lot to me, really. It just is just already a connection to it, right. So I already feel connected to it and it means more to me because I’ve already had somebody go through the army as well”
