Dalton’s Harmon Field Still Going Strong Despite Being Nearly 100 Years Old
Dalton, GA-(WDEF-TV) Said Dalton QB Club President Andy Johnson: “There’s been many, many, many wars that have been fought on this field.”
Harmon Field dates back almost 100 years back.
Said Johnson: “I
n 1926. Harmon Field was gifted to the to the city and the city held it for years and years and years. And, uh, this has just been a staple of our community.”
Later, it became the high school football team’s field and has seen a lot of history.
Said Dalton QB Club member Bill Blackwood: “You know, the generations of kids that have come through here that, you know, a lot of them are still here. A lot of them You know, grandparents played here. They’ve, you know, coached here. They’ve gone to be leaders in the community. You know, like we sit in the same seats. I sat in 1974.”
it’s made countless memories for the community coming together.
Said Blackwood: “I think it is a community connection. I think, you know, everybody rides by here. They say, Oh man, you know, it’s it’s Harmon field, you know, used to practice back here, you know, uh, Natalie practice at the high school. But, you know, a lot of people in our community, you know, they come and You know, each and every Friday night to be here and be part of the community and, um, you know, just continue the tradition on Friday nights.”
Said Johnson: “Our town would literally shut down at noon. Businesses would shut down. You had go big red signs and every window downtown. Uh, and everything just kind of ventured up to Harmon field to the armory to the practice field here. Uh, people tailgating and bringing our, bringing our players in.”
and made memories that will never be forgotten.
Said Johnson: “We were playing and on the scoreboard here, it was, it was late in the game. Seconds left, four seconds left to go in the game. Actually, Woodward’s about to score. We’re tied up. There was nothing before on the scoreboard. It was fourth down, four to go. Uh, fourth quarter. It’s just amazing. Amazing. Number 44 Jason High intercepts the ball. and runs all the way and scores. We win that game.”
The field means so much to the community that people risk their homes to add a field house to the stadium.
Said Johnson: “It’s a group of local gentlemen that leveraged everything they had. Obviously times were super hard back then. They put their houses up, they leveraged everything they had for for this venue right here for Harmon Field.”
