Dangerous Fall at Greenway Quarry

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Another dangerous rescue at a well-known local spot.

Chattanooga firefighters were called to the rock quarry at Greenway Farms Tuesday night after a man fell more than thirty feet from the side of the quarry.

Crews with Red Shift responded around 8:15 PM, navigating difficult terrain in the woods to reach the injured man.

Using a pulley haul system, they carefully lifted him out and transported him to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Chattanooga Fire Department says rescues like this one require hours of effort and extensive manpower. Over the past several years, five people have been pulled from this same quarry.

Chief Terry Knowles of the Chattanooga Fire Department had this to say about the incident.

“Anytime we have to go over the edge first it’s making contact as fast as we can with the victim so we will set up a quick rope system. Send one to two rescuers over real fast. Get them down there and let them start assessing the patient as they’re assessing the patient seeing the medical needs that they need the other teams are up top setting up very elaborate rope systems to haul them back up”

The department trains both current and incoming firefighters at this very site, using the quarry’s tough terrain to prepare for real-life rescues.

Visitors are reminded to watch for posted safety signs and warnings throughout the area.

The CFD reminds everyone that beautiful views aren’t worth the risk. Stay safe out there.
