David Conrady Excited by Challenge of Replacing John Shulman as McCallie’s Basketball Coach

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Last April McCallie named David Conrady as their new head basketball coach. Conrady is no stranger to the Scenic City.
He was a UTC assistant and the former head coach at CCS.
Now he’s returning to Chattanooga after a successful stint at Prestonwood Christian Academy in Texas, where he won a state title in 2017.

David Conrady was an assistant coach at UTC for six seasons under John Shulman, and now he’s replacing Shulman as the Blue Tornado’s head coach.
Said Conrady:”It’s neat to come back here and to have a chance to kind of replace him, but he set the bar so high here. It’s going to be awfully hard to continue what he was able to do here at McCallie.”
Conrady was with Shulman and the Mocs when Steph Curry did his tour de force through the SoCon at Davidson.
Said Conrady:”The first time we started talking about them in Steph’s freshman year, coach (Shulman) came in and said at least I know they’re not going to be as good as they have been in the past. I said coach you’re right. They’re not as good as they’ve been in the past. They’re better. They’ve got this freshman who can really, really play.”
Conrady expects fun times at McCallie when they face the rival Red Raiders of Baylor.
Said Conrady:”My wife’s favorite color is red, so she has had to change her favorite color. She had a ride bike. We’re going to paint that blue. Her instagram. It should be red. She’s had to change that. So I understand the importance of wearing that McCallie blue.”
Playing Baylor and the other big time division two schools is just part of the challenge Conrady welcomes at McCallie.
Said Conrady:”And that was one of the things coming back to McCallie was their pursuit of excellence in everything, and not just on the athletic field, but in the class room and in the community.”
And the community for Conrady is the whole world.
He has coached and done basketball camps across the globe.
Said Conrady:”My life was completely changed when I went on a mission trip with SCORE International. I saw the platform that I had to do good and to serve other people simply because I could play the game of basketball. So I really want to engage others in that same opportunity.”
