Debrief Kid Sheriff: Engaging Parents
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Its 6 o’clock–do you know where your kids are?
Hamilton county sheriff Jim Hammond says that, even at this early hour, many parents are not taking the time to spend time with…and talk with their kids.
He says that failure leads to troubles with the law.
We have the the details from the Sheriff’s department provides School Resources officers to provide a link between troubled, or impressionable students and the law, but Sheriff Jim Hammond these days is telling groups that the most important step in establishing communications…it for parents to start being parents.
“I think I’m deeply concerned as a law enforcement official to see..the way young people today, in many instances the parents are not engaged…couldn’t tell you where they are, when they’ll be in, and some are too trusting in allowing them to go off without checking the facts.”- said Sheriff Hammond
Hammond says he knows parents are busier than ever with jobs and daily cares, but…
“There’s no reason any parent shouldn’t be able to set aside some time to have a little quality time, if you will, with their youngster. ”
Kids themselves also face more temptations.
“We need to do it more and more today than we ever have …Given the gang problems we have..given the drug problems we have…given all the crazy stuff that’s on television …And that’s another point ..Monitor what your kids are watching.”
Along with teachers, coaches, counselors and trusted friends…the sheriff says a lot of juvenile problems could be headed off by dedicated parents.
“You’re not the buddy, you’re not on the same level with your kids, I’m not your friend..I’m your parent and because I’m your parent …I love you and I want to see you grow up to be an active mature adult who earns their way in life..but in order to do that I’m here to point out to you the pitfalls along the way.”
