Deputies arrest 4 on drug, gun charges following chase
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — Hamilton County deputies arrested four people following a vehicle pursuit on Tuesday. Authorities charged those involved with gun and drug charges.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol previously attempted to stop the suspects, who were in a gray Dodge Challenger around 10 p.m., but they had terminated the pursuit.
A short time later, a Hamilton County deputy found the vehicle on I-24 and attempted to stop them. However, the suspects fled and eventually collided with a patrol vehicle on West Crest Road. A PIT maneuver ultimately stopped the chase at Glenwood Avenue and 3rd Street, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).
The sheriff’s office identified the four people in the vehicle as Malik Phillips, who was driving, Dexter Mayes, Chyna Baker and Asia Brown.
Deputies searched the vehicle and said they found marijuana, drug paraphernalia and fentanyl pills.
During the chase, the HCSO said deputies witnessed the suspects throw items out of the window on Westside Drive. They searched that location and found a polymer 9mm “ghost gun,” several 9mm rounds and a baseplate from a Glock pistol magazine.
The sheriff’s office said the driver, Phillips, faces a long list of charges. Those include:
- Evading arrest.
- Speeding.
- Possession of a controlled substance.
- Possession of drug paraphernalia.
- Drugs general category for resale.
- Stop sign violation.
- Reckless driving.
- Reckless endangerment.
- Light law violation.
- Tampering with or fabricating evidence.
- Contraband in penal institutions.
- Possession of a firearm during a felony.
- Traffic control signals violation.
Authorities charged both Baker and Brown with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and drugs general category for resale.
However, the sheriff’s office said they expect more charges to come following their investigation.
