Deputies arrest Texas suspect in northeast Alabama

Jose Angel Becerra lived in Fyffe but was wanted for a murder and assault in the Rio Grande Valley

FORT PAYNE, Alabama (WDEF) – DeKalb County Sheriff’s officers along with other agencies captured a suspect wanted in Texas today.

The suspect was Jose Angel Becerra from Fyffe on Sand Mountain.

But he was wanted in McAllen, Texas, along the Mexican border, for murder and aggravated assault charges.

It took U.S. Marshals, officers from DeKalb County, plus the SWAT Teams in Huntsville and Madison Counties, along with the FBI to make the arrest.

Sheriff Nick Welden says while they were negotiating with him, Becerra fled on foot toward County Road 420 in Fyffe.

But they chased him down.

They say Becerra did suffer minor injuries when he tried to kick out a window in the patrol car.

Becerra was arrested in what was considered a gang related shooting involving a botched drug deal in the Rio Grande Valley when he was a teenager.

The Sheriff says “I would like to thank the DeKalb County Special Response Team, FBI, Madison County SWAT Team, Huntsville Police Department SWAT Team and the US Marshall Service in the capture of this dangerous individual.  Effective communication among agencies is key in every successful case and this case is a perfect example of that.”
