Deputy gets fentanyl poisoning at over-dose scene

Grundy County officer had to use Narcan on himself

GRUETLI-LAAGER, Tennessee (WDEF) – You’ve seen stories of first responders stocking their vehicles with Narcan to protect them from overdoses.

The Grundy County Sheriff shares a story about why.

Last night, deputies responded to an overdose in Gruetli-Laager.

They used Narcan on the subject and sent them on to the hospital.

But later, one of the deputies started having a reaction, too.

He was near an EMS station when it happened, so he self-applied his own dose of Narcan and went to the station for treatment.

Later, the drug overdose subject confirmed that it was on fentanyl.

Sheriff Shrum says “We have experienced a significant increase in overdoses over the past 10 days. This incident shows just how dangerous these calls can be to law enforcement. Our deputy was aware of what was happening and done exactly as he was trained. He is doing well.”
