Driving Our Economy Forward: Barge Design Solutions

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Barge Design Solutions might have several locations throughout the southeast, but they’re making waves right here in Chattanooga.

They’re serving the community in many ways – from engineering to landscaping.

Let’s see how they’re driving our economy forward.

“Barge Design Solutions is a multidisciplinary design firm,” said Matt Stovall, Client Service Lead. “We have full-service engineering architecture, landscape architecture, civil engineering, all design disciplines. This particular office has a strength in civil engineering and landscape architecture. We have over six landscape architects in this office. We’ve been in Chattanooga for over 20 years. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been involved with a lot of significant projects. We’ve worked on Enterprise South Industrial Park. We’ve worked on the Tennessee River Park, and we’ve also worked recently on the new Little Debbie Park in Collegedale, Tennessee.”

“There are lots of different projects where you have to almost look at lots of different layouts, organization of the spaces and parking and building orientation, and maximizing solar capacity on site,” said Paul Darr, Senior Landscape Architect. “So, there’s just a lot of things that we work with the client up front to make sure that they’re happy with the end product. The profession of landscape architecture is just such a unique one because we always get involved in such unique projects. Most recently, I’ve been involved in a project in Birmingham, Alabama, which is another kind of reconnecting communities type of project, which is taking a mile long corridor of space underneath an interstate and turning it into a public space. And so that alone, for a city like Birmingham has also been a game changer, just because it’s reconnected institutions, neighborhoods, under a space that’s previously known as kind of a dark and underutilized space. I’m very proud of that one as well, just because we have won a state award through the ACEC Engineering Organization. We won the state award, which then allowed us to pursue the national award, which we have done, and we won an honor award at the national level.

“Quality of life is an important component of the things that we design for, and that in turn influences the economy,” Stovall said. “So, we’re very proud of the work that we’ve done and how we’ve influenced the economy of Chattanooga.”
