Driving our Economy Forward: Covenant Logistics
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) –It’s a trucking company that started in Chattanooga back in 1985. Now, Covenant Logistics has grown its company to help customers develop supply chains across the country. This week we are learning how the business continues to drive our economy forward with freight transportation.
“Covenant is a logistics company, out, stationed out of Chattanooga Tennessee here. And we own several different companies that do a wide variety of the trucking transportation business. We’re also involved in warehousing throughout the United States. If it’s something that needs to be moved and, our company it probably has a hand in it somewhere. We probably have about 400 employees here in Chattanooga that work. we’ve got over 3,000 drivers out on the road which hopefully we keep, we keep moving on a daily basis,” says Jeff Young, Safety Behavioral Manager, Covenant Logistics
Jamey Moon, Lead Field Recruiter, Covenant Transport says, “I’ve been with Covenant for 30 years. Their programs have excellent the trainers here like their students because when they get out of school they know how to drive.”
Jeff Young also says, “We have drivers that that transition from w where they’ve worked at for a long time. Like I said, we have doctors, lawyers, educators, uh that uh want a little change in their life. They’ll go to a CDL a school. A lot of them go to the Chattanooga State and learn how to become uh CDL truck drivers. They will come over to Covenant Transport and we will train them here. We have three days in orientation that they come and learn the way that we do business here, our paperwork and things like that.”
Henry Watson, III, Student, U.S. Virgin Islands “What makes me want to be a driver the most is seeing different places; being able to travel the country. And being different you know; see like you said, different food. Seeing different places. Um, benefits mostly important to take care of my family.”
Jeff Young also said, “We want to double check and make sure that they uh they can operate a commercial motor vehicle safely. So, I have a team of drivers, the trainers here that that do that with them. If they pass that, they’ll go out with a with a driver trainer for the company. If they graduate that successfully then they’ll be out on the road as a as a CDL truck driver for the company. We give them a place to work and be successful here. We let most, you know lots, of our drivers always tell them that… uh we want them to uh be successful and uh retire from here.”
