Drug trafficking in North Carolina leads to multiple arrests

CHEROKEE COUNTY, NC. (WDEF) — A sizeable amount of Methamphetamine was seized from drug traffickers in North Carolina.

Cherokee County Narcotics Unit started an investigation involving Kenneth Charles Smith after receiving information that Smith was trafficking Methamphetamine.

Smith and India Shelton were involved in a traffic stop July 31, 2024, due to registration displayed on the vehicle being cancelled.

During the stop, Methamphetamine was seized from the vehicle.

Cherokee and Clay County Sheriff’s Offices obtained a search warrant for Smith’s residence at 765 Cold Branch Road on the same day as the traffic stop.

Officials located multiple firearms and more Methamphetamine, totaling 168 grams seized from Smith’s home and vehicle.

Cherokee County Narcotics Unit seized 2 more ounces of Methamphetamine after discovering new information linking Smith to the drugs on August 6, 2024 at 172 West Hill Drive in Murphy North Carolina.

Smith is charged with the following:

  • Three counts of Trafficking in Methamphetamine
  • Two counts of Maintain a Dwelling or Vehicle
  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture/Sell/Deliver Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Smith is currently being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $300,000 bond.

Shelton was charged with two counts of Trafficking in Methamphetamine, and is also being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond.
