East Ridge Police Department caution online shoppers about package theft

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) —  Amazon Prime Day is here and online shoppers are ready to fill up their cart promising huge discounts and deals there is something for everyone.

With online activity spiking this week the East ridge police department wants to warn shoppers to proceed with caution

“Today or any other day you receive packages try to make a plan either try to be home when your package is delivered have it shipped to a location you know is secure such as a work place or one one of the hub delivery sites you can get a code that only you can access,” said Assistant Chief of Police Josh Creel.

According to security.org, porch theft will increase by 40 percent during this weeks event.

“The Chattanooga area has seen fair share of porch pirates.  It’s kind of an emergent crime based on the fact that home delivery services exploded upon our community.  You have food, medicine, and gifts coming to your home.  In the past, you went to a place and bought it.  As purchasing trends change, so does the crime trends,” said Creel.
