Eighth graders learn valuable construction skills in Chattanooga camp
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Associated General Contractors of East Tennessee hosted a camp to get 15 eighth graders interested in construction and demolition. They learned about the basics of structure, electrical, carpentry, plumbing and finishings.
The camp ran from June the 28 through June 30.
At the Construction Career Center, students are laying the foundation for a successful career.
“We have some of the kids who are participating. These are upcoming eighth graders in town. They have got the opportunity to learn about construction,” said John Clevenger, Project Manager for P&C Construction. “The idea is that they can take the prerequisite classes in 9th and 10th grade that will allow them to attend the Construction Career Center where this camp is being hosted.”
Older students can learn skills to land them a job right after graduation.
“Day one, we did carpentry. Some of the things that they learned were how to use a miter saw safely. Other things, like on your tape measure, every 16th number is red. And the reason for that is so you can measure studs in a wall,” Clevenger said. “On the second day we did masonry day and they learned how to make mortar.”
It’s a great place to learn and find out if a construction job is right for you.
“The industry has a ton of opportunities for young people to come in. It has got an industry that has a lot of people who are moving on and to the retirement age, and so we are really excited to have the opportunity for younger people to fill in those roles,” said Clevenger. “I don’t think a lot of people know how much opportunity there is in both the trades and construction. It is really good to get everybody out here and get them a job.”
