Errors cast Mocs in Sunday loss to Wofford

GoMocs- Chattanooga fell 11-7 to Wofford Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference softball action at Frost Stadium.

The Mocs move to 26-10 overall and 7-2 in SoCon play. UTC retains its hold on first place, one game ahead of UNCG who fell in extra innings today at Samford. Wofford improves to 14-16 on the year and 4-5 against the league.

Wofford used a five-run fourth inning to take the lead from the Mocs and pull away for its second straight win.

The Terriers led 1-0 in the first on a single up the middle with two runners on.

Chattanooga answered with a pair in the second for the first of two leads in the game. Kendall Forsythe reached on a dropped fly ball to third. Kaili Phillips, hit by a pitch for the 12th time this season, put runners on first and second. Addy Keylon sacrificed the runners over and a double from pinch hitter Anna Dovey drove in the Mocs first two runs of the game, giving UTC a 2-1 lead after two.

Wofford took the lead again, scoring two runs in the third to go up 3-2, but the Mocs responded in the bottom of the inning.

With two outs, Forsythe and Phillips each singled to put runners on for Keylon. She took it out of the park with a three-run shot to give the Mocs a 5-3 lead after three.

The fourth, however, saw the Terriers score five runs and never trail again. The first two batters walked and a single through the right side scored one run. Two more runs crossed the plate on a fielding error to put Wofford up 6-5. With a runner on third, a wild pitch sent the seventh run of the game home for the Terriers and the eighth run scored on a single down the right field line.

Wofford scored three more runs in the fifth and Chattanooga cut the lead to four runs with two in the bottom of the inning.

Baileigh Pitts, who reached on a single, scored on a double off the bat of Phillips and Abby Orr, running for Phillips, scored on a single up the middle by Jayce Purdy.

Chattanooga outhit Wofford 10-7, but tallied a season-high six errors and stranded seven runners. Keylon was 2-for-3 Sunday with three RBI on a home run and Phillips was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dovey had two RBI on her one at bat.

The Mocs used four pitchers, combining for six strikeouts and eight walks.
