District Attorney Shari Tayloe says that 47-year-old John Scott Ball was charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

Authorities say he will serve a life sentence.

The DA explained that Ball shot his father, John Henry Ball, and cut up his corpse in Polk County.

He then buried his father’s remains in Monroe County, according to the DA’s office.

They added that a hiker then found those remains near Tellico Plains in May of 2022.

“Securing a life sentence for such a gruesome crime can only happen with the diligence and teamwork of our local law enforcement agencies. I am proud to partner with them,” DA Tayloe said.

Several law enforcement agencies assisted in this case. Those include the TBI, McMinn County Sheriff’s Office, Etowah Police Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Police Department, the 10th Judicial Drug Task Force and the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
