Every Mocs Player Scored in 75-36 Win Over N.C. Central

(gomocs.com) DURHAM, N.C. — It was complete dominance by the Chattanooga women’s basketball team on Monday night, as the Mocs steamrolled NC Central in their own gym enroute to a 75-36 blowout victory in favor of UTC.
The Mocs (2-1) out-performed the Eagles (0-4) from start to finish, having never trailed in what would be a 39-point stomping by Chattanooga. Every player that was active for the Mocs not only checked into the game, but scored points and contributed to the massive UTC win.
“Tonight was all about poise and composure,” head coach Deandra Schirmer said. “Coming to our first road test against an all-out pressure team was a challenge but the way we responded was perfect. I am so proud of this group and how they have bought into our game plan. Our defense put up another impressive performance by holding them under 40 points. We had a huge emphasis on rebounding as well so to win that margin was a big key to the game.”
From the opening basket of the game by Sigrun Olafsdottir, the Mocs hit the gas and never looked back as UTC opened its night on an 11-1 scoring run. NCCU wouldn’t even find its first field goal of the night until the 2:50 mark of the first quarter. Through the opening ten minutes of action Chattanooga was already looking at a double-digit, 19-6 advantage over the Eagles.
The Mocs didn’t stop there heading into the second, as the duo of Gianna Corbitt and Sigrun Olafsdottir paced the Mocs with Corbitt knocking down multiple shots while Olafsdottir dished assist after assist. Before long, North Carolina Central found itself down 42-17 at the halftime break with UTC looking seemingly unstoppable on both sides of the ball.
With such a sizable advantage, the Mocs’ bench saw a good amount of second half playing time including the likes of Frode Flos van der Schans, Ava Card, Kailyn Farrell and Masa Buzic. Each would find their way onto the scoresheet, with Buzic scoring her first collegiate points in her UTC debut while van der Schans would drop a career-high eight points that included her hitting her first career three-pointer in front of an electric UTC bench.
While the Eagles continued to press and create chaos up until the final buzzer, the Mocs never flinched as the team bulldozed its way to an emphatic 75-36 result over NCCU. In a game with numerous notes that include season-highs and lockdown defense by the Mocs, the most impressive would be that UTC held the Eagles to log only one assist as a team in the entire game. It is confirmed to be the fewest assists allowed by Chattanooga in a game since 1996, and presumably the fewest assists allowed in a game in program history.
Sigrun Olafsdottir nearly put together a historic performance for the Mocs, finishing just shy of recording the fourth triple-double in program history. The Iceland native ended her night with 10 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
True freshman Gianna Corbitt led the Mocs in scoring with a career-high 12 points, Corbitt’s first double-digit scoring effort of her college career. Three other UTC players finished right behind Olafsdottir’s 10-point performance as Caia Elisaldez, Flo van der Schans and Ava Card each would add eight apiece.
FROM THE HEAD COACH
On everyone getting a chance to play and contribute in the win.
“Our strength is going to be in numbers. We have so many talented players that can help contribute to us winning games. Our bench was phenomenal and almost out scored the other team by themselves. In the process to get everyone to buy into their roles a game like this is a huge reinforcement to the type of unselfish game we are trying to play.”
