Expect 3-Point Barrage Under New Mocs Basketball Coach Dan Earl

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Mocs basketball coach Dan Earl announced the signing of guard Brody Robinson of Houston on Monday. He’ll join this year’s team.
Coach Earl says Robinson can shoot the ball from deep range, which plays right into Earl’s coaching philosophy. Don’t be surprised if Chattanooga sets a school record for three pointers this season with Earl’s aggressive three-point attack.

Dan Earl admits he fell in love with the three ball…almost out of necessity.

Said Earl:”I was at VMI. We didn’t necessarily have the best athletes in the world either. To be able to space the floor. Shoot a ton of three’s. It’s a different style. We like to get up and down. The three point line again if you’re making shots, you can give people problems on any given night.”

Earl owns a masters degree in business logistics so he studied the numbers on the affect of launching a number of threes.

Said Earl:”I still like to see a bunch of guys play and figure out who I think can play or not, but then you couple it with the analytics side. As you know the baseball side is have with ‘Moneyball’ and that whole thing, but it has really crept into the basketball game. So we looked at it quite a bit.”

At VMI last year, the Keydets shot 1,049 three’s…averaging 32 attempts a game.

Said Earl:”At VMI we shot the first or second most three’s in the nation in the last two years, so there were many games that we shot more three-point field goal attempts than two point field goal attempts.”

VMI transfer center Jake Stephens will join the Mocs this year. He hit basically 50-percent of his three pointers last year. And he’s seven feet tall.

Said Earl:”Jake Stephens has been a guy for us that has really stretched the floor. It opens up things. The opposing center has to play you on the perimeter. So it opens up some avenues and driving lines and back-door cuts for the guards and forwards. as well. It’s an exciting brand of basketball to watch. Certainly dunks bring the crowd off their feet. But if you can bang home some three’s, that certainly does as well. If you can make them as high a clip as we did sometimes last year and certainly what we’re trying to do at Chattanooga, I think the crowd will really enjoy watching us play.”
