Faith-based counselor pleads guilty to sexual assault

DALTON (WDEF) – A faith-based counselor has taken a plea deal that got him two years in prison.

Daniel Staats was charged in December with four counts of sexual assault by a psychotherapist.

The Dalton Daily Citizen reports he pleaded guilty to just one of those counts today in court.

Investigators say he groped and had sexual relations with women who were ordered by a court to see a counselor.

Staats operated the Christian counseling service, Helping the Hurting.

Back in December, one of those women told investigators that during a counseling session, Staats asked her inappropriate questions and fondled her breast.
She said Staats then exposed himself, and encouraged her to perform oral sex on him.
In addition to the two years in prison, Staats was sentenced to 18 years on probation.
