Faysal Shafaat Becomes True Tight End For Chattanooga Mocs

Chattanooga-(WDEF) For many teams, the tight end is almost an after-thought on offense.

But not at UTC.
Mocs coach Russ Huesman says Chattanooga will game plan ways to get the ball to Faysal Shafaat, who has become a big time play-maker.
Faysal Shafaat used to a quarterback’s worst nightmare in high school, getting 20 sacks his senior season.
Chuckles Huesman,"Wow. I think somebody is making that up. No, there was never a doubt that he was going to be a tight end."
Said Shafaat,"Chattanooga was one of the few schools that recruited me for offense. All the other schools wanted me for D-end. We ran the Wing-T in high school, so I really didn’t get the ball unless it was third and long or we needed a touchdown."
Shafaat admits it took time developing into a college tight end.
"I really couldn’t block anybody. Coach knew it. He said if I ever wanted to get on the field. He knew I could make plays, but he was like, you’ve got to block first, and then we’ll get you the ball."
Said Shafaat,"I mean he was a receiver that was made a tight end. But he has adjusted really well. He has become a true tight end, and you can do anything you want with him."
Shafaat has morphed into a three time All SoCon player, who may have the best hands on the team.
Said Huesman,"But I don’t remember him dropping a ball since he has been here. Great hands. And obviously he makes the spectacular catches too."
Shafaat has enjoyed his time at Chattanooga so much, his Mom wrote a letter to the UTC coaches.
Said Huesman,"She appreciated everything we had done for him. Thanked us. She was so happy she sent her son to school here."
Said Shafaat,"I guess my Mom was just thankful. Came from a small school. Didn’t even know if I was going to get a college scholarship. When I got here, I didn’t know if I would ever play. I just feel blessed to be apart of this."
