Fetal heartbeat abortion bill passes a committee vote

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – Tennessee is a step closer to passing one of the toughest abortion laws in the country.

The bill would ban abortions as soon as a heartbeat is detected in the fetus.

That is usually in about six weeks after pregnancy.

On Tuesday, the House public health committee passed the bill easily, by 15-4.

It still must be approved by the full House and Senate, plus get approval from the Governor.

But new Governor Bill Lee has already signaled that he will sign any anti-abortion bill presented to him, even if it means a Supreme Court fight.

And the leaders of both the House and Senate are for it.
