Firefighters Battle Second Blaze at Chattanooga National Cemetery

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – From a distance, hundreds of head stones at the Chattanooga National Cemetry are almost unrecognizeable.

Deborah Kendrick, Cemetery Director, says, "Right now we have an investigator that’s going to come out and try to look into what may have caused it."

Investigators with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Tennessee State Bomb and Arson Office were on-site Monday, sifting through ashes and looking in trash cans.

Kendrick adds, "He said try to limit the traffic into the area until they can complete a thorough investigation."

The investigation comes on the heels on yet another cemetery fire.

The first one happened on January 19th.

1,6000 head stones were damaged then, 500 now.

Kendrick adds, "The fire department had responded and we found that section DD 5, a totally different section had been set on fire."

Both fires still puzzle investigators.

Now, clean up will have start back up again.

Ten head stones needed to be replaced last time.

No word on if any will need to be replaced this time.

Whatever the outcome, residents say it’s hard both physically and emotionally to see the smoke creep up head stones, and cause the words to almost disappear.

If you have any information on these fires, call the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
