Former Chief Justice Mickey Barker dies at the age of 81

Signal Mountain resident was a judge in Tennessee for over 25 years

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Longtime legal figure Mickey Barker has died.

The Judge from Signal Mountain once served as chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court.

Her retired from the court in 2008, capping off a judicial career of more than 25 years.

Barker was born in Chattanooga, got his undergraduate degree at the University of Chattanooga and joined the Army.

He was appointed as a Circuit Court Judge in 1983. and then was elected to the position twice.

He kept moving up the judicial court ladder until joining the Supreme Court in 1998.

He was chosen as chief justice in 2005.

Judge William Barker passed away this morning at the age of 81.

Tennessee State Senator Bo Watson has released the following statement on the news of Justice Mickey Barker’s passing:

“Chief Justice Mickey Barker was an extraordinary judge, who dedicated his life to strengthening Tennessee’s justice system. His many years of public service to Chattanooga, Hamilton County and our state are an exceptional legacy. Nicole and I are saddened to hear of his passing, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones.” – Sen. Bo Watson
