Former transgender inmate settles with Georgia prison officials

ATLANTA (AP) – A former transgender inmate who had complained that she didn’t get adequate treatment for her gender identity condition has settled a lawsuit against Georgia prison officials.

Court records show Ashley Diamond voluntarily dismissed her lawsuit Thursday. A spokesman for the state attorney general says the state has agreed to pay $250,000 to settle the case. Diamond’s attorney, Chinyere Ezie, said that’s “not an accurate representation of the final settlement award” but said she couldn’t elaborate because she’s bound by confidentiality.

Diamond’s suit, filed a year ago, said prison officials failed to provide adequate treatment for her gender dysphoria, a condition causing a person to experience extreme distress because of a disconnect between their birth sex and gender identity.

Diamond was granted parole in August.
