Former Vol John Kelly Soaking Up Super Bowl Experience With the Rams

Atlanta, GA-(WDEF-TV) John Kelly combined for close to 2,000 yards from scrimmage during his three years at the University of Tennessee. Now he backs up former Georgia running back Todd Gurley for the Los Angeles Rams. At the age of 22, Kelly will play in his first ever Super Bowl, and he’s doing it right here in Atlanta.

Kelly went from averaging 98 yards a game at Tennessee to being drafted in the sixth round by the Los Angeles Rams.

Kelly made only four appearances for 101 yards for the Rams this season playing behind  Gurley. But the decades old SEC rivalry stops at smack talk for the two Rams backs.

said Kelly: TG a good dude. He solid. He funny. He tries to give me a little crap about the rivalry every now and then but we ain’t sweating. We know my boys at Tennessee going to be ready every year.

Kelly’s ready for this year’s Super Bowl and the potential of scoring his first NFL touchdown on the big stage.

Said Kelly: It only takes one play to be the Super Bowl MVP so for me if I was able to do that would be nice. My mom would be here too so it would be nice if she’d be able to see that. I bet mom’s already proud that Kelly is playing in the Super Bowl as a rookie.  I can’t even explain to you all. I mean words can’t explain how excited I am. Honestly I’m not able to explain all the emotions I’ve got for it. I’m just glad to be here.

Kelly is joined by fellow Tennessee Volunteer and Chattanooga native Jacques McClendon. McClendon is the Rams’ director of player engagement.
