From The Archives: 1982 Flooding

The flood took out the Suck Creek Bridge, cutting off Tennessee River residents

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tennessee (WDEF) – We usually think of summertime as hot and dry in our area.

But this year is an outlier.

It has been hot, but we’ve also seen more than our share of rain in East Tennessee this summer.

However, that’s not unheard of.

40 years ago was a wet year in the Tennessee.

In August, we saw some major flooding. Not just street flooding, but the kind that wiped out bridges.

A flood on Suck Creek in August of 1982 took out the bridge at the bottom that connected people who live along the river with Chattanooga.

For awhile, they just had a log put across the creek to let them cross.

This is the story from 1982 of the temporary bridge they had to create across Suck Creek.
