From The Archives: Christmas Movies in 1986

See the busts and the hits from the holiday season 36 years ago

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – While your family make hunker down for some serious steaming over Christmas weekend, the tradition used to be of bundling them all up to go to the movies.

So we’re taking you back to the year 1986 to see what was playing at Christmas.

The stars that year were Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Jane Fonda and Clint Eastwood.

And, of course, there was a Disney film for the kids.

Some scored hits and some had misses.

Our story also shows us one of our local theaters from the past (Eastgate Mall).

The biggest hit of the Christmas season that year was The Golden Child, starring Eddie Murphy.

But Clint Eastwood’s Heartbreak Ridge did very well in our area.

The comedy “Three Amigos”… not so much.

By the way, the biggest film from 1986 was Top Gun, and it wasn’t even close.

Crocodile Dundee finished a distant second behind hit. But it was a good year for popcorn movies that included Aliens, Star Trek IV, the second Karate Kid movie and Ferris Buhler’s Day Off.
